Elster-Instromet, part of the German-based Elster Group, is a worldwide market leader and specialist in flow measurement & control equipment and systems focused on gas. Elster-Instromet manufactures energy measuring systems, ultrasonic gas flowmeters, diaphragm meters, low and medium pressure turbine meters for custody transfer and non-custody transfer measurements, positive displacement rotary piston meters for industrial applications as well as volume correctors used in the gas metering industry. The firm operates in industrial, commercial, and residential markets throughout the world.

History and Organization

Elster can trace its roots to three events. The first was the founding of the American Meter Company in 1836, the second was the formation of Elster in Berlin in 1848, and the third was the founding of Instromet in the Netherlands in 1965. Elster was originally a maker of gas lamps, and began production of large station gas meters in 1853 in order to grow the company.

In 1985, Ruhrgas acquired Elster Gas Metering and continued to acquire a larger portfolio of metering companies, including Instromet in 2001. In 2005, CVC Capital Partners acquired Ruhrgas Industries and renamed it the Elster Group.

Today, the company is one of the world’s largest electricity, gas, and water measurement, and control providers. Their offerings include distribution monitoring and control, advanced smart metering, demand response, networking and software solutions, and numerous related communications and services. Elster’s products and solutions are widely used by utilities in the traditional and emerging Smart Grid markets.

Elster has one of the most extensive installed revenue measurement bases in the world, with more than 200 million metering devices deployed over the course of the last 10 years. It sells its products and services in more than 130 countries across electricity, gas, water and multi-utility applications for residential, commercial and industrial, and transmission and distribution applications.

Elster Gas North America combines the products and resources of well-recognized and respected brands such as Elster American Meter, Elster Perfection, Elster Canadian Meter, Elster Instromet, Elster Gas Depot, Elster Meter Services and Elster Amco de Mexico. The Group’s aim is to help its customers increase their productivity and efficiency through their portfolio of measurement and distribution products for the gas industry.
